I hike Camelback Mt in Phx Az and there are several places
where it's similar to a road with a median except for a sign.
Why the hell do so many people walk on the left?

Tourists? A large part of the world drives on the left and it feels natural to walk on the left for those people, as well. Also you might notice that it could be to get away from the edge for some people.

This topic has been in several science magazines and popular websites. A study showed that about 80% of people who walked on the left had much lesser IQs than those on the right.

Well we are the only country that drive on the right side of the road We are a habit forming species so some follow and other lead.
What can I say its the only thing I can think of except they like doing things against the grain.

i love camelback mountain!!!!
i dont remember very much of the trail, but perhaps its easier on the other side... im really not sure. it might have more space, make people feel more confident/secure, be more level, less crammed/more open?
maybe someone else can help

It's safer to walk against traffic.

That makes sense if you think about it. If an automobile loses control you want to be able to see it so that you can get out of the way.

It is simply a force of habit to walk on [a certain side] or it could be for ease or simplicity.
Your guess is as good as mine.
