Pvt. Opha Mae Johnson became the first woman to enlist in the Marine Corps Reserve Aug. 13, 1918. A total of 305 women served in the Marine Corps Reserve during World War I. Most of these women Marines, referred to as Marinettes, freed male Marines from clerical billets at Headquarters Marine Corps, enabling them to fight in France. Others filled jobs at recruiting stations across the country.

Yes! In 1901 women could join the Navy as nurses. They weren't part of the military yet, but some nurses served during the Civil War and some even died.

Could you imagine being in a female the military before 1920 and not even being able to vote????

There were women in the auxiliary corps in World War I (1917-1918) so I assume that they were in the military in 1930.

Not likely, Rosie the Riveter became huge in 1942 when all the husbands went into WWII, until then women didnt have a large role outside of the home let alone the military.

Yes that is very possible, the US Army Nurse Corps was in existence then. Even though the Women's Army Corps did not start until 1941 if my memory serves right.

To my recollection the only females with military status were nurses. I do not believe secretaries were military but were civilians. It wasn't until WWII that each branch of the service developed its own women's corps.

Yes, there was women's corps. at that time! i also went to army women's museum at Fort Lee,VA. there were also female pilots during WWII.
