I need suggestions for gifts for (1) a newborn boy; (2) his 4-year old brother; and (3) his 5 1/2 year old brother. I want to make the older brothers feel appreciated and not 'left out'. This is for an American family who, obviously, already has the basic baby stuff.

Newborn baby----a supersoft blanket to swaddle in this just getting cool weather. And books were popular with me when my little ones were born. Try Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson or Llama, Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. Maybe a gift certificate for a local portrait studio?

4 year old and 5 1/2 year old----exactly the ages of my two boys so this should be easy. Let's hope that noisy obnoxious toys are out. Maybe a new cartoon that will help to keep them occupied while parents tend to newborn....Transformers toys and videos are extremely popular with my boys.....coloring books/crayons.....books to read to new baby would be great (see above for two of our favorites)......hmm....it's so close to Christmas now that it's hard to think of fun, yet practical gift ideas.

Also great for the entire family would be gift certificates for either home cooked meals or to a few local carryout restaurants. Or a gift certificate for a new family photo. Free baby-sitting couldn't hurt either.

Best of luck!

If you're not sure what kinds of things the older brothers like, how about some gift certificates to a local restaurant, McDonald's or Chuck E. Cheese so they can go out and spend some time with their father or mother without the baby sibling. For the baby, how about a baby book or picture frame? If you don't mind the practical, I always give new parents a pack of disposable diapers (size 1), a pack of wipes, a bottle of baby wash and baby lotion. You can never have enough of that kind of stuff.

For the newborn I would get a kids tune cd or a picture book. For the older kids I would get a cute t shirt about being the middle child, oldest child, ect. Maybe take them out to do something so they feel really important.

If you wanted you could get them play doh, a paint set for a picture frame or something. Possible talk to the parents about what they may think to be the best gift for the boys. They would know them better then anyone else.

You might want to get the kids something they normally wouldn't get or something they would realize as a big kid item. Depending on the kids you could get the older one their own child cd player and one cd. You could get the middle child a story book about being a big brother and a small remote control truck.

Hope this helps.

Take those older boys out to do something, that would be the best gift ever for both the boys and the parents. Plus the extra attention for the older boys, who might feel left out with the newborn.
