Yeah, the 80GB PS3 plays almost every PS2 and PS1 game, the 60GB PS3 can play nearly every single PS1 and PS2 title.
I think that the 80GB PS3 is the best buy now since the 60GB PS3's aren't made anymore, plus the 80GB PS3 comes with Motorstorm, an excellent PS3 exclusive game. I own the 60GB PS3 and I think that the 60GB PS3 is the better version because of the increased backward compatibility.

Well actually the 80GB plays a lot less PS2 games than does the 60GB, and in fact the 80GB plays a lot of games with some problems. For instance, a pretty popular series for the PS2 was Socom, definately not an obscure title or series, here's what the compatibility check came up with the Socom series of games: (Linked the checker)
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs
Description: Throughout the DOCUMENTARY FMV sequence, the title stutters.
SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs
Description: At a random point during gameplay, the title hangs.
SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs
Description: When the user attempts to enter network gameplay, an error message appears, and the user is unable to progress.
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs - Combined Assault
Description: The title is unable to perform intended HDD functionality.
So as you can see it's not just off-title games that the 80GB has tough times with. Now same titles with the 60GB reveal these reports:
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs
Description: Description: The following conditions have been confirmed on PS3 System Software Version 1.80: With a USB headset inserted, the title hangs on a loading screen directly prior to gameplay or the sebsequent FMA. All conditions have been resolved on PS3 System Software Version 1.81.
SOCOM II: U.S. Navy SEALs
Description: The title is unable to perform intended HDD functionality.
SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs
Description: The title is unable to perform intended HDD functionality.
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs - Combined Assault
Description: The title is unable to perform intended HDD functionality.
Pretty big difference, one system locks and hangs on the game, the other, just can't use the HDD functions.

60bg is best but 80gb is not a bad second. If BC is really important to you then run out and get a 60gb PS3 quick, but for someone like me without a PS2, I just got 80gb cuz of 80gb! And there was a good deal at the time.

Yes, it doesn't play all PS2 games, but it plays most of them, the only games not playable are very obscure titles that you wouldn't want to play in the first place.
But, in my opinion, the 60GB was better because it had full backwards compatibility, though it's not being made anymore.
