LINGEN, HANNOVER, PREUSSEN?
Bless the hearts of those trying to help. However, let's make sure we are singing off the correct sheet of music, i.e. looking at the correct “Lingen.”
As a pro' Germanic genealogist since '79, our counsel has saved our clients & patrons thousands of dollars by our having prevented them from digging at the wrong roots.
Your query must be approached in a proper, more targeted manner. According to Meyers Orts und Verkehrslexikon des Deutschen Reichs, a pre-WW1 gazetteer of the entire Germanic empire, there are 3 Lingen entries & 1 Linggen entry. If you wish to consider other spelling variations, e.g. Lengen, then it becomes even more wide-spread. For now, we shall stick with your provided spelling.
The Lingen in the province of Hannover (aka Niedersachsen)is the largest of the four and, therefore, statistically, in the absence of evidence or even rumor to the contrary, is the likeliest.
But that is something you might be able to decide by other known corroborating data. For example, associated with your ancestral Lingen, is there another neighboring town, district, province, state or place-name known or mentioned? This would be so that you could pin down the correct Ling(g)en.
