Shoot right behind the front leg (Heart & Lungs) just as you would if you were using a high powered rifle..#00 has 9-.32 caliber buckshot (Pellets) in each shell.......PLEASE..Make sure your state allows you to use Buckshot and it is LEGAL.
HEAD shots are not practical and are very risky at best...I wish you and your son Good Hunting.......

If the deer is facing broad side to you then you want to aim just behind the shoulder and about middle vertically.
If it’s facing towards you when you shoot then aim right in the middle of the chest.
And if "that big buck" is facing away from you then estimate where the vitals are and shoot there, you will most likely break the spine here.
A side note here, every deer I’ve shot with #00 buckshot and 12guage has dropped on the spot. I personally think you should always shoot for the lungs, because they are your largest easiest target to aim for.
Anyway have a good hunt.

Buck shot should be used if your son is hunting in thick cover where he cannot cover a lot of ground. I personally believe buckshot is accurate and deadly at a maximum range of 50 yards. Your son should aim for the front shoulder where the pellets will have the chance to hit the deer's vitals. If he is hunting in an area where he can cover more ground, slugs are the best option.

The kill zone area on a Deer is 10" to 12'" near and around behind the front shoulder.* I would recommend you use Rifled Slugs instead of 00 Buck.* Forget the head shot, no way.* It also makes the Hunter a better marksman when using Rifled slugs.*

The heart/lung area just behind the shoulder is the largest vital area and should be the target of choice. I have known people, myself included, who have had problems with buckshot...mostly due to lack of homework. Make sure you pattern the gun at a range to be sure the buckshot is grouping well before you use it on deer.

Going to have to be a pretty close range shot.
Shot placement isn't going to matter much beyond 25 yards.
Use a slug round, aim just behind the shoulder, middle of the chest area.
With a slug, shoot no further than 100 yards.
Practice with the gun and the round so you know where to aim to compensate for the drop of the slug at different ranges.

Am agreeing with all who answer heart-lung area, but cannot recommend buckshot past 25 yards. it will not keep any kind of pattern, and a grouping of shot, not the scatter effect, is the whole point.
As the great British safari hunters of old would say, "Get as close as you can, laddie, then get ten yards closer."

No, not the head. Why is he using #00 buckshot? He should be using sabots.
