You don't want to drug a dog just to shave him.. You should desensitize him to the whole ordeal.. make it all fun!

Do some research on Professional dog groomers in your area call and check how long they have been in business and ask them certain questions like How long have you or your groomers been doing this, when you take your pet in to be groomed see if they groom them in an open area where they can be seen, ask around to your neighbors with dogs and see who they recommend for grooming. Dogs are allot harder to groom for their owners than they are for groomers. If you like him really smooth and short when you go in to the grooming salon ask for a 7 backwards this leaves a nice short smooth finish and NO LINES!!!! I don't know why some groomers are in the business when allot of these people just take on-line courses then call them selves groomers. It takes hands on training and some real talent to be able to work with live animals and is allot harder than it looks. I would not change my job for anything in the world. But don't let one bad apple spoil the bunch there are good repuitable ones out there just keep looking.
* I don't want to doubt you on grooming him your self I just know from seing it done by people that have tried grooming their dogs at home that you can easily nick or cut them, and end up doing a chop job and making things worse!
Plus getting the propper equiptment is very expensive, you will need a really good pair of clippers which can run anywhere from $100-200 easy scissors which are $20-150 easy and not too mention all the different blades you will need. Good Luck!!!
*Yes there are sedetives you can get from the vet but is not recommened for the simple fact it is very unneccesary to do, your dog can experience liver damage and each time you give an animal a sedetive it takes years off their life.

Why is his being a wired hair a problem? Or take him to another groomer that can give references.

I personally don't like doping up animals. Did you try Petco down where I like they do a great job on my dog. Since you pup is young the more he gets groomed he will get use to it and eventually calm down. Other than that idk.
