I have a 10 year old black great dane named pepper and she's the best dog I've ever had. Aside from being beautiful, she's the sweetest, most well behaved dog I've ever seen. She got really sick over the summer and almost died but I got her a $400 surgery and she's doing excellent now. doesn't act 10 at all! I think they're the best dog you can get..unless you have small children they might accidentally step on(lol) anyone have a great dane or share the same thoughts?

the surgery was because her uterus got infected, she was never fixed and we didn't know it had risks. She's never had puppies either. He did put her to sleep when doing the surgery and he's an excellent vet and will work with people who are short on money. He had to remove her uterus, it weighed 7lbs cause it was so full of infection. There were several things he didn't charge me for and her scar is barely noticable! She's definitely a trooper. she runs around still when i let her outside! no problems with bowls or getting up either!

I love them! I have two adults. My male is a black and my female is a meryl. Right now we have 9 puppies and we have sooooo much fun with them. My dogs are well behaved and the male loves to talk to everyone. He does this long drawn out howl when you walk up to him. The female sleeps with me and takes up most of my queen sized bed. They are the best dogs ever.

I grew up with danes. My parents already had one when I was born, had others through out my time at home, and they still have three right now.

They are very sweet dogs in general, of course each have their own personalities. Yes, it can get a little dangerous with small children...I remember one of my younger brothers had his eye poked by the dog's tail.

You are lucky that your dog is alive and well at 10. The life span of a dane is fairly short and they have their fair share of medical problems they are prone to. Glad you have a wonderful companion and Pepper has a loving home.

I've seen and met some at the local dog park, they are so cute and the ones I've met are very friendly. I love watching Great Dane puppies - it's funny to see such a large animal act like such a young puppy!

I own a 7month old Great Dane, and I agree, she has been one of the best dogs I've owned. She's great with my two very small dogs, and her bestfriend is my three year old neice. It's so cute, b/c she will start to play and not realize she's rough with her, and when my niece starts to pucker up, she will walk over to her lick her until she pets her again. It's so cute... Here's a picture of the two.

I've always wanted a Great Dane, but have never had the chance to get one. I'd like to adopt one, but none have come into the shelters nearby, and there aren't any rescues close. Someday.

They aren't a popular breed in my area but my aunt owns 6! Hers are all great, they act like puppies even into old age. Their tales are lethal weapons once they start wagging! Hers are very soft natured, they're eager to please and don't require a ton of exercise for their size.

Her oldest lived to be 12 and was happy and healthy until his last month of life. It's always kind of a shock to first time visitors at her house to walk in and see all these huge dogs just lounging around, covering basically every stick of furniture in the house. I've always wanted one but they're just to big for me.

I'm glad your dog is OK now but in my opinion, great danes are too big, I prefer smaller dogs.

Wow...ten? Most great danes are lucky to make it to nine! This dog has to be super healthy! What was the surgery, because anything requiring anesthesia is over 600 dollars...and overnight observation is very expensive...I wish my vet was as cheap as yours...

I do not own one, but Oh Dear they are wonderful. Not a mean bone on them. Good deal with the surgery! And I hope many good years to come!

I love them. I had one but we had to put her down cuz she developed bone cancer. But yes they are the sweetest and very misunderstood. They are also very protective and take up a lot of space on a bed.
