Religion is neutral. Good people will use it to explain why they do good things; bad people will use it to justify their negative actions.

Religion is about 'ultimate truth'. And yet there are many religions. If mine is 'true', then yours, of course, MUST be false. No one wants to be told their truth is a delusion. Hence, discussing religion tends to lead to arguments amongst people.

I do not argue. All I ask is you show me evidence, evidence which will stand up in front of a judge and jury. The bible does not count as it is hearsay, unconfirmed, uncorroborated. It was written from oral history which could easily have been embellished along the way. You say God exists. I say show me. I do not know if religion is good or bad. Religions all say the same things, our God is THE God and all the rest of you are doomed to everlasting torment. So, which one IS the one true God anyway? Each religion declares itself the one true religion by denying all others as worshippers of false Gods and therefore doomed to torment. Every religion says believe in our God if you want to be saved. Saved from what? Every religion has miracles, and every religion says God has a plan, so tell me what part did the Tsunami play in God's plan? How about Hurricane Katrina? I don't see anybody thanking God for those tidbits of God's plan. I have faith in science and evidence. I have no faith in faith. Oh, I just SO love torquing thumpers! The thing is, if you are right, and all of this IS part of God's plan, then so is my doubt, and how can God condemn me for being the way God MADE me? That would imply God to be fallible, able to make a mistake in how he made me, and I am innocent yet doomed and have lost nothing by having doubts because it wasn't MY fault, but God's for making me as I am! What is it exactly that makes your God THE God anyway? Why is your God so cruel and harsh even to true believers? What exactly was the point in torturing Job? Why kill everyone and only save those on the ark? Were there NO more good people? How could such a kind and merciful God destroy SO many people and animals? Yeah, OK, show me something, ANYTHING which will stand up in a court of law. The first religion to step forward with ANY hard evidence gets 10 points and my total devotion and complete belief!

When little old widows go to mass and it gives them hope and wonder and a connection with the transcendent it is very very good.
When people use it to stroke there ego and prove others wrong that's not religion that is in fact the opposite of what most religions teach.
Its not religion that is really evil its politics and its economics.
