Be careful. You don't want to get anything too nice, since they don't want to seem like it was a kickback. A nice letter of thank you, to start with. Then, if there is some book you have shared or some book on a topic you've discussed you think the teacher would find interesting, this is very appropriate. No more then 20 dollars, though. Books would be the most appropriate gift, actually. Gift Certificates are too impersonal for this occasion, though for many they aren't. Since you are thanking them for the learning, more knowledge is the best idea.

Maybe just a nice thank-you card, or a small gift certificate to a popular restaurant in the area. For a woman, one or two fresh flowers in a vase, with a thank-you note.

If a instructor is prepared that might actually assist you out by potential of writing a letter of advice, the only 'present' mandatory is a superb thank you word. something greater then that could seem unethical - in spite of in case you recommend it as an user-friendly gesture of gratitude, evaluate the certainty it places that instructor in a clumsy place. in the event that they settle for it they might experience uncomfortable approximately finding (or feeling) unethical, and in the event that they elect to not settle for it, they threat unfavorable their relationship with you.
