Most students enjoy learning other languages, it is usually only the drongoes who muck about, distract the other students and make learning unleasant for others. Pay attention, listen and concentrate and you will find language learning a pleasure. Learning another language also helps you to understand and appreciate your own.

I speak English, Spanish, Dutch, German and a bit of Italian. you put me in a class to learn any of these languages and I will fail from lack of interest. I learnt some of these languages from living in the Country. I would advise unmotivated learners to find a group of people where they can speak in a foreign language that they are learning a few times a week. Speaking it and interacting is more fun than learning it in a class, or will help you keep the attention whilst in class. If you live in the foreign country and are trying to learn the language, then go out as much as possible and speak the language where ever you are.

Learning a second language can involve a lot of frustration, and many students resent having to take the subject in school (since it is usually mandatory).

In my years of teaching English, I found that the best motivator of all was to realize that almost everyone's favorite subject is ... their own life, memories, experiences, likes, and dislikes. In speaking activities - including grammar practice in pairs and groups - look for as many opportunities as you can to get the students talking about themselves and their interests.

One more tip: Even if you have great activities, the energy level in the classroom will drop if the students are always in the same sorts of groups. Switch from working in the whole class group to working in groups of 3 to 6 to working in pairs, and make these shifts every twenty to thirty minutes. You'll be amazed at the difference it will make.

Good luck!

I'm welsh and I love learning other languages. Apart from the obvious...Welsh, I've learned to speak English, fluently and I can get by in French and Portuguese.I tried Russian but I used to read it like a 6 year old...very slowly ...which was rather embarrassing so I tried Portuguese instead.

im taking Spanish now, and it was kinda exciting when i first started. after a while its gotten kinda boring. but if you think about it, once you learn enough words and phrases, soon you'll be able to have a convo in a whole other language. if you have a friend or something in the same class, you could talk with them. i guess thats kinda what keeps me motivated...the fact that at some point ill be able to speak spanish without barely thinking about it =) haha hope this helps!
