Well right now I'm in college and I don't have time to get a part time job. Money is running low and fees keep popping up. I've thought about joining the Coast Guard Reserves, but I'm afraid of not having time to see my family. And I don't want to be obligated to do this whenever they call for me. I don't know anyone else who's done the Reserves before. So your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Joining any goverment job is like a having a full time job. Sometimes with even deployments. You will get to see your family still just not as much and it depends on where you are stationed. I think I am not for sure. Good Luck Sweetie!

I'm in the Navy as an enlisted man. I joined active duty out of high school and have been serving for 5 years. More important than what service you join is what job/MOS/Rate you get when you enter. Research what each service has to offer you as an occupation. Coast guard mostly deals with small ships and the Navy usually with big ships. Coast guard does mostly rescue and drug operations. Navy does worldwide things. Reserves is very different than active. Reservists have a totally different outlook on the military and it is never as important in their life as someone who does it every day. If i had a full time job as a civilian, and i had this decision to make, i would go with the coast guard reserves because they will probably try harder to keep you closer to home. Coast guard rarely does overseas deployments. Good luck

If those are your cons, you should seriously consider NOT joining the military.
Its an 8 yr. service obligation, and you cant "call in" when you dont have time or dont want to go.
I dont say it to be rude, I just want to tell you the truth.
In addition, coast gaurd excepts very few every year, and I doubt they would take someone with such a poor view of their obligation.

The correct answer is no if you cannot commit then forget it. Any branch of the service is about 1 commitment if you can't do it then it is not for you.

It would cure you of your committment issues real fast because you would have no choice.
