I don't know how the scam would work. Does anyone have any thoughts on it?

You don't provide enough details. I guess you got a fake check, they ask you to deposit it, then ask for a Western Union type cash payment of only part of the balance. And like pennies from heaven you get to keep the rest. Then the check bounces, and you owe the bank. Go to fakechecks.org.

Area code 306 is in Saskatoon, Canada. Call the local police there, give them the info. They may be able to track down the perps.

There is a reverse check being used ,it looks like a regular check but it is set up backwards

Sounds like a scam to me.
If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
I came across similar scam.
