Why not have a Best Woman?! I'm sure there is a woman you are close to who would be honored.
My sister had a situation in her wedding where she needed another bridesmaid and she ended up asking a cousin she didn't necessarily feel super close to at the time but was relatively close in age. Her reasoning was at least with family you know they will be around for the rest of your life (not like, for example, someone you work with currently.) Turns out after both being married and having babies of their own, she's gotten much closer to that cousin because they're in a different stage of life. The point being- someone in your family will be with you forever. Good luck man!

Is there any way you can help your best friend out with the travel costs? That's the downside of those destination weddings - the couple really should plan on helping out with those associated costs instead of expecting everyone to pony up in addition to everything else (tux rental, etc.)

If travel costs are the only reason for your 1st choice to not make it to the destination wedding, maybe you should consider helping them out with the costs.

That's why I dislike destination weddings. They are too expensive for the attendants and guests.

That sucks, you could always help pay for him to go. I mean, if you are already paying for stuff a little more for a plane ticket would be worth it for your best friend to be there. Trust me you'll not regret it. you will regret the memory being gone over a couple hundred bucks for a plain ticket.

it happened to me too. i was within two weeks of getting married when I had to get a new best man. my wife's maid of honor didn't even show for the wedding, she had issues with race we did not know about until then! life happens.

Southern tradition (I believe) dictates that your dad be the best man. Also, if the bride has a brother, that would be a wonderful option. Do you have any other groomsmen? choose from one of them if you do.

a male relative.. your dad is nice.. but you don't have to pick a man... if you have a sister you could ask her to stand up for you..
