As long as your Great Dane isn't a puppy. I used to work for PetsMart, and I used to have a great dane, and thats the food I fed her. If you have a puppy, though, I would suggest feeding it something like Iams large breed puppy. Authority is a good brand, and PetsMart does stand by their products.

Authority is comparative to Purina One, which is generally thought of as a good mid level food (I like it better than Science Diet personally). However, I would recommend checking other brands in your price range before completely making up your mind.
Always check the ingredients. The first should be meat. Type of animal the meat came from doesn't matter. Meat meal is ground and dehydrated meat and bone and is okay. By-products are all those parts of an animal not meant for human consumption (like the heads and feet of chickens and the brains and intestines of cattle). I look for a food with Meat and then Meat meal. I stay away from by-products.
Avoid Corn, Wheat, and Soy in the first 10 ingredients. They are common allergens and have little nutritional value. Whole grains like oats, barley and rice are more filling and the bran is full of vitamins and minerals. Be aware of companies that split grains (list multiple parts of the same grain) it could mean more of the grain than the meat.
Absolutely no artificial colors, preservatives, or flavors. The colors have been linked to hyperactivity in kids (and is suspect amongst dogs). Artificial preservatives like BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin have been linked to cancer.
At PetsMart, the best food imo is Blue Buffalo (it is the only one I'd consider at PetsMart). Other good foods include Solid Gold, Innova, Canidae, and Timberwolf Organics (I feed Timberwolf to my girls). I used to feed Blue Buffalo when I worked at PetsMart, I went to work somewhere else and switched foods for the employee discount.
Hope that helps.

I'd wait until 8-12 months before switching to an adult food. Rule of thumb for dogs is a puppy becomes a dog at 1 year old, but larger breeds age faster. Oh and looks for something other than Pedigree its like feeding your dog roadkill.

I think most foods that are made for large breeds are good these days. I personally like Eagle brand as it doesn't have the preservatives in it. The point of large breed food is usually to slow their growth during development so that they don't have nearly as many problems once they are full grown.

I had a friend who raised and showed Great Danes for many years, she was always worried and rightly so about bloat. She lost a good many dogs to it. I found this website while looking for commercial dog food alternatives. It was good enough that I kept the address in my favorites. I hope it helps you as much as it educated me. Good Luck and God Bless.

I would suggest a large breed food for their hips, bones, etc since they are so big to make sure they get the proper nutrition for their size.

Check with your vet and see what he/she recommends. As with any dog food, check to insure the first two contents on the label are meat or poultry as the majority of the food is made up of these first two listed ingredients. Fruits, veggies and probiotics are always good ingredients to be included in your choice of dog food.
