You may not be able to join the Air Force or Navy because of your age. The Army is still an option. If your heart was set on the Navy or Air Force, check out the Reserves. I know the Air Force Reserves will take a new enlistee up to age 35.
If you are 28 and still do not have a career course set for yourself, get into one of the services to get your life moving. Too often people do not realize they are going nowhere in life until they hit their mid-30's. You are still young enough to get moving. So do it!

Like many others in here by 28 I had 3 years active, 4.5 in Reserves and had made Staff Sergeant. That means I was promoted 5 times.
On the civilian side I was out of the field and doing tech support for 300 field techs. Had a 3 year old, 1 on the way and was closing escrow on my 1st home.
My point????? If at 28 you are coming here to get advice you may not find a completely friendly crowd. There are a lot of self made go getters in here.
You need to crap or get off the pot and do it quick. What you need is tough love and a kick in the butt.
Think about it!

whats with the "i'm gonna die" attitude.
Not everyone in the military dies. In fact its more probable to die in a car crash on the california state highway.
Anyhow you have a few options to be honest Air Force really is the "safest". However it seems your leaning towards something else.
You could join the peace corps. definatly not gonna die in the peace corp.
You could also join the army and pick a "safer" MOS than something like special forces or infantry, become a cook or medic. Which is "safer".
Good Luck to you.

WHY won't they take you? the standards that you do not meet for Navy and AF may also be the same standards for Army and Marines. 28 is not too old, the age cutoff for Navy is 35 for Non prior service. so It isn't that. .

STAY HOME YOUR GETTING TO THE AGE THAT MOST BRANCHES DONT WANT TO TAKE YOU >SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE HAD A SHADY PAST THATS WHY THE NAVY OR AIR FORCE WONT CONSIDER YOU.ALSO SOUNDS LIKE YOUR TRYING TO GET AWAY FOR SOME REASON >IF YOU HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA TALK TO THE ARMY THEY ARE MORE FORGIVING AND I JUST READ THAT THE MILITARY IS TRYING TO ENTICE ENLISTMENT TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE MINOR CRIMNAL PAST.

the army has a plethora of different military occupational specialties that do not involve combat. however you may still spend a tour overseas and depending on your occupational specialty, you may be required to be in a combat zone to perform your duties. the usmc on the other hand may be your best chance at "staying alive" since all marines, regardless of mos, are first and foremost riflemen.

what's going on with you? there is just something missing and it seems like this is a last resort. if that's the case, you may want to rethink your plan, you won't be happy with it. and by the way. you can get hit with a parked car or a falling tree branch can impale you and get killed. trip and fall and crack your head and fall into a coma, stranger things have happened.
