Lying would only make it worse. Tell the truth...take your lumps.

If I got taken to court fro hurting someone who attacked me, I would stand up loud and proud and state my case and not back down from what I think is the right thing to do. Regardless of getting in trouble, I would feel that strongly that I was in the right I would be willing to take on the judicial system. If I got convicted, I would go down screaming injustice all the way....but I'd still go through with it

I doubt you'd be the one being taken to court because you attacked your attacker, if that makes sense. It was self defense and you felt threatened. The first rule in cooperating with the Criminal Justice system is to tell the truth and nothing but the truth. They should've told you that once they asked you to get on the stand. I don't know if there's a statute of limitations on assaulting someone.
To help yourself out, you have to help the court out in telling the truth. Once they put the two stories together, they'll find justice on your part.
As Dr. Phil says, "As flat as a pancake is, there is always two sides to every story." He said something like that. I'm sure your side of the story will fall in court and you probably could charge him/her for battery.
I don't know the law in England, but I hope this helps you in the U.S.

First I wouldn't tell anyone. Second it should not tear you apart for some one that would have probably raped and beat you to have gotten in trouble and I am sure you are not his first victim or his last. And if you have to bend the truth for justice then so be it. I do not know the laws of perjury in England, but I would keep my mouth shut. Forget about it because your attacker is probably still out their doing it to others. Don't think about it anymore. It is not worth it and he sure is not worth it at all......

if you hurt the attacker, this is completely justifiable as SELF DEFENSE. There is no need to lie. The attacker hired a "scheister" lawyer to sue you to scare you into doing something stupid like lying. NEVER LIE, because if they find out, you will be charged with PERJURY and on top of that, you will be a less reliable witness against the attacker.

First of all if you hurt your attacker, GOOD FOR YOU!! There are too many now a days that get away with it. Keep your mouth shut!!! Honey here in America, its called "Self Defense" Let the bastard pay for what he did or tried to do, even if that means telling a "little white lie."

Why would what happened tear you apart? I don't get that. Just keep your mouth shout and move on with life. It's over.

I would not say anything that would incriminate me in a crime. If two years had passed and I was a free person I would continue to enjoy my freedom.

why lie? sounds like self defense. the problem with lying is that you better have an excellent memory because eventually you are gonna get caught in your lie.
