just so you know, 30-40 lbs will take you MONTHS!!! stay away from the carbs unless you are working out HARD. carbs is what gives you energy and what energy from those carbs that you don;t use, will get stored as fat. like you've heard b 4, no junk. "cut the crap" don't cheat yourself in saying "i deserve a treat" your not a dog so don't treat yourself. if you are going to treat your self have an ice pop. if you are that serios about loosing so much weight you need to stop NOW. CArdio (like running or swimming) is KEY. but if you run everyday you are riking injury so try to diversify. also if you're a woman, you need to lift weights. it's repetitions not weight. instaed of 700 lb weights just use a 5 or even a 3 lb weight but do like three reps of 10. if you have comcast, go on demand they have some great light weight training you can do for free! you have to remember that you are doing this for yourself and if you cheat in your workouts, your cheating yourself, then you can call yourself a cheater. so you have to be committed. GOODDDDD LUCKKK

Ok first of all calm down, and don't panic. It's great that you want to take better care of yourself. First and fore most before starting any exercise plan talk to your doctor to make sure there isn't any health reasons to prevent you from exercising.
You need to start out slow if you haven't been very active so you don't get hurt by over doing things ( most people go gunho the first day, then wonder why they hurt so much the next day. Then stop going because of the pain.)Work you way up slowly to 30 min. to a hour of exercising a day, doing free weights one day then cardio the next. Ask the trainers, (if your gym has them, what exercises would work best for you.)
If you can afford it see about working with a trainer once a week for about the first month or so. That way you can be sure your doing the exercises correctly to prevent injuries.
Make sure you do warm-ups before you do anything so your muscles are primed for your work-out or your going to get hurt. And make sure to drink plenty of fluids before, during and after exercising.
It will keep you hydrated and stave off cramping.Go easy on the sports drinks though as they have a lot of sugar and calories in them.
Next to tone you can use free weights start out light (about 1 -5 pounds if your not active) you want to use lighter weights and do more reps or the times you lift the weight.
eg. using 2 pounds lifting 5 times vs using 5 pounds 2 times.
Using heavy weights will add muscle mass or bulk you up.
Muscle weights more than fat as it is more dense, but the more lean muscle you have the more calories your body burns.
Try to eat a diet that is 40% protein 30% carbs and 20-30% fats.Stay away from the powders and supplements, they are mainly for the body builders. An old fashioned multi vitamin should work just fine to start out with. The only time you should need other supplements is if you aren't eating right or not enough to fuel your body correctly.
Also since muscle weighs more than fat don't get worried if the scale seem to show a weight gain instead of a loss. Go by how your clothes feel on you. Worry about the inches not the pounds. You may notice a drop in a few pounds when you first start exercising as you will be losing mostly water weight for the first week or two. Figure on losing 1-2 pounds a week for the first month then as you get more lean muscle 2-5 pounds a week after that.
It may take quite a few months to reach your goal of losing 30-40 pounds but it will be well worth it in the end.
Good Luck I hope this helps

So you're going to the gym to get toned. That's a good idea, because in addition to getting toned, you will also lose weight. Exercise doesn't cause weight gain. It tones your muscles and burns calories. As for what to eat, just eat sensibly. That means lots of protein, fruits and veggies, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. Watch the size of your portions (no second helpings) and no junk food. In a few months time, you should have a great body! In addition to working out at the gym, you might also try bicycling and walking. Those will also help to lose those unwanted pounds. Good luck!

You need to start by setting a real goal. What are you really trying to accomplish? A smaller dress size, less flab, a smaller number on the scale?
Then, break that large goal down into small, acheivable goals that move you in the right direction, otherwise you will get discouraged and quit. Most people start by saying that they will consistently keep a food journal OR go to the gym regularly OR make regular tape measurements of their body.
Whether you want to start by changing your diet or working out is your choice, but you should try to do one at a time. If you start by working out though, be sure that you do not start eating more (you will want to because working out makes you hungry!)
If you are not used to working out regularly, try starting at 2-3 days a week, preferably with a day off in between each day of working out so that your body can heal. Choose an activity that you enjoy so that you will stick with it; feel free to change activities until you find the one that is right for you.
As for the weight, a lot of people will gain weight when they first start working out (because muscle weighs more than fat), but you will start looking thinner/more toned even though you weigh more. Additionally, that muscle will help you burn fat faster, making your results quicker, especially in the beginning.
Try to focus more on clothing size or tape measurements of your arms/thighs/waist/chest/hips than on weight because the scale will lie to you, especially at the beginning (when you put on good muscle weight) and when you start to fall off a routine (when you start to drop muscle weight, thus dropping your metabolism).
Oh, and more important than anything else, today is always the day to get started doing something, even if you don't know everything you wish you did.
Good luck!

One thing.. Eat fruit! An apple, Two oranges, NO POUNDS!!
You can live on Fruits, Vegetables (not so much potatoes) and A little serving of meat. For energy, eat bananas, and top it off with a glass of milk. Its hard to start, but you will not BELIEVE how much of a differance it makes. Go to the gym in the mornings, you will feel energised for the rest of the day! Around (if you have kids) 8:00 or so, ship the kids to school and go work out!
Have fun!!

You should go to the gym probably about 5 times a week.
And you should eat protien to stay energized.
And you can kind of tone and lose weight, but muscle weighs more than fat, so if you want to lose weight you should do more cardio.
So if you're toned but you weigh a bit more than you did before, it just means that you've gained more muscle.
Hope that helped :-)

why is GYM capitalized?
go every other day, eat plenty of protein, leafy greens, veggies, fruits, etc. drink plenty of water (especially at the GYM), and limit your fat intake. eat some fats, since you need them.
if you don't need to lose those 30-40 pounds, your body will let you know. muscle weighs more than fat, so don't get frustrated if it doesn't look like you are losing anything. being healthy is what's important, not numbers on the scale.

i usually go about 3-4 times a week, eat healthy things and you should be good, drink a lot of water.
Best thing is when you join the gym the usually always get you started with a trainer or give you a one time go with a trainer free and he/she and you tell them your goals and they will set you up with a work out plan, and tell you what to eat and not eat. GOOD LUCK
