I just moved into a property that shares a spacious yard with 2 other tenants, one who happens to be a little old lady. I own two terrier mixes (Lhasa Apso and cairn terrier is the best i can guess). Anyway, both dogs exhibited anxiety when we first moved, but seem to be a little better, and they have always been a little aggressive towards strangers(at least in my opinion). So I bet you can guess the problem... How do i train them to stop barking at the little old lady every time they see her? This last time I swear they were going to take her down, and one even nipped at the back of her heels. Is there a method to make them less aggressive, or to acclimate them to the neighbors?

Couple of books, Click to Calm and The Cautious Canine. You need to work on both the dogs' behavior and how they feel about strangers. The first step is not letting them practice the bad behavior, they only get better at it. Learn about triggers, thresholds, counter conditioning and desensitization. You can find info at

You need to get your dogs (and yourself) some obedeince training. Also, your dogs need to be "socialized". Take them into public places and GRADUALLY get them used to being around strangers. As a last resort, I would suggest using a training collar (sometimes called a "shock collar) which works with a remote control and gives the dog a mild electrical shock when you press the button. Some see this as cruel, but when you compare it to the damage even a small dog can do to an elderly person or a small child, there is no comparison.

Mostly you probably just need to train and socialize them.

GIve your neighbor some dog cookies. Take ONE dog out on lead & see if she can't toss cookie to dog from a few feet away. Repeat with second dog. After about a week I bet the sight of her gets tail wags......

use a snapping leash. next time take your dog out on asnapping leash and if the dog tries to nip pull it and it scares the dog. this does work but you have to be consistent. the leashes are avalible at pet stores online.

Some dogs simply just do not know what to think of a little old lady....give it time. Introduce them slowly....to get them thinking maybe she isnt too bad...

My dog jumps on other people (but he's a little dog) and I always put him in the other room.
