I am looking for a bolt action rifle that is consistantly accurate at 500 yds and has a good reputation for being durable. I want to be able to shoot at least .270 and 7mm cartridges most likely 30-06 cartridges, and I would like the price to be under $500. I will most likely be using it for deer hunting but now I would use it mainly for long range target practice.

There are so many good options out there from the Remington 700 to the Savage 110. It is hard to go wrong with a reputable manufacturer. The cartridge will be a personal choice for everyone and I would recommend the .30-06 or the .308 Winchester as rounds quite capable of reaching out there.

I don't know what this 500 yards issue is today as now you are the second one to cite that distance for hunting. It takes a very masterful hunter at 300 yards to hit a 9 inch paper plate consistently. That is a good test because that is basically the same size as the target area on a deer. I would recommend that until you are proficient at that range that you concentrate shooting at whatever range you can consistently hit your shots within a target that size. It is only humane to hunt where the expected outcome is a well aimed clean kill.

The .30-06 and .308 are both venerable warhorses at this range and capable of beyond yet bullet drop, wind and shooter stability greatly affect the hits beyond even 200 yards so start small and work your way out.

Good luck with the target shooting and best wishes for a clean kill.

500 yards is a long way.a 7mm may do the trick. 30-06 will get you there especially with a 150 grain bullet, which is what I shoot. The drop at 500 yards would be like 24 inches.

I would not suggest an average hunter to ever shoot at an animal at 500 yards. Too far, not worth the possibility of wounding an animal. Keep your shots to 200 yards or less until you know what you are doing. 300 yards is a long shot even with a good scope.

One in a 100 hunters could kill a deer at 500 yards with one shot. Are you one in a hundred? If you are asking this question and willing to take that shot you would not be hunting in my party.

I'm going to have to suggest the Remmington 700 due to it's large range of available chamberings (Anything from .17 Remington to .375 RUM),and if by 7mm you mean the 7.92x57mm Mauser i'd suggest any of the Mauser bolt action rifles. As for 30-06 i would suggest the M1 Garand or the M1903 Springfield

Go with Remington, Savage or Winchester Model 70 pre 64 in 30-06 or 308 caliber.*

You can look into a company called Howa. They make really nice bolt action rifles in many different calibers. And they are a good price. I bought a .270 WSM brand new with a scope for under 500 bucks.

a new savage would meet all your criteria. but YOU cant hit a deer at 500 yards, practice on a 4'x8 sheet of plywood and find out. find out at what range you can hit a paper plate 3 times out of 3 & dont shoot at game farther out than that from field shooting positions, not from a sand bag bench.
for an experienced shooter thats usually 200 to 300 yards.

Look at the Remington 700 and the Savage Arms. both are good accurate guns and not all that expensive. The Remington is a bit more expensive than the Savage.

I have come to prefer the Remington 700 ADL to all others. Because they are no-frills they can be found on the used market for quite a bit less than their fancier cousins, and shoot just as well. Also for me they balance and shoulder perfectly, and trigger pull is very consistent and predictable.
