The white drug is propofol. It's used to put people off to sleep, and can be used to keep them asleep. It burns when injected, so we frequently mix it with numbing medicine (lidocaine) to reduce the discomfort.
People really like propofol. It must have quite a euphoric effect. It takes seconds to start working, so you're out quickly.
Any anesthetic can to make your eyes roll back. For general anesthetics, we tape eyelids shut so the eyeball doesn't dry out and cause a corneal abrasion.
If you're not used to seeing people go under anesthesia, it can be a little of-putting. Sometimes, instead of eyes rolling back, people just stare. I hate that (and tape the eyelids, as mentioned above).
Don't worry, you'll do fine.

I just recently had my wisdom teeth and had iv anesthesia for the extractions. I also was very nervous about going to sleep and the surgery. I was able to get some really good information on Yahoo Answers.
From my experience it was not painful at all. I could barely feel the pinch of the actual iv, and do not remember falling asleep. It happens very quickly and definitely was not painful. The drugs that you will be given will act very fast. Have a great sleep and good luck.

Hello-
I am 23 and have had my wisdom teeth pulled and multiple other surgeries, each time they put me to sleep. The anesthesia does not hurt- your arm may feel a little warm when they inject into the IV but other than that you won't feel anything. Then they will probably tell you to count backwards from 100- I doubt you will get passed 95- the anesthesia will make you very sleepy, very quickly.
Now, after the surgery there will be pain! You will not feel well for at least two weeks-
Tip- take two of your longest socks- safteypin them together and put zip lock baggies filled with ice in each sock- then you can wrap the socks around your face to keep the ice on. That will help with the pain and the swelling. You may look dorky but it will make you feel better.
So go get a bunch of movies- and yogurt/jello...don't drink out of straws or smoke cigs for at least 3/4 weeks and try to be as relaxed as possible before the surgery begins.
Best of luck!

When I had my wisdom teeth out, the doctor gassed me and gave me an IV. It didn't hurt at all. The gas was pleasant for the 15 seconds I was awake and IV's never bothered me.
I agree that it's creepy looking. I was in the operating room and watched my daughter get anesthesia and she looked very odd, but certainly not in pain. It is just weird to watch, that's all. The eyes roll back because you're going to sleep so fast you don't even close your lids fast enough.

I had my wisdom teeth out with sodium pentethol ( an IV in my arm) It does't hurt a bit and you go out so fast you don't even know it. When I woke up I couldn't stop laughing.
Don't be scared. It's a piece of cake!

It doesn't hurt at all. In fact, you probably won't even notice you're going to sleep. When you wake up, you might still be wondering WHEN they're putting you to sleep.

Once they stick the iv in, you're out like a light and you won't even know what happened!
