The earliest dated printed book known is the "Diamond Sutra", printed in China in 868 CE. However, it is suspected that book printing may have occurred long before this date.
Before Gutenberg, printing was limited in the number of editions made and nearly exclusively decorative, used for pictures and designs
Johannes Gutenberg was a German craftsman and inventor. Gutenberg is best known for the Gutenberg press, an innovative printing press machine that used movable type.It remained the standard until the 20th century. Gutenberg made printing cheap.

No, read simple History, BUT the reason the Puritans came to this Continent was to practice their own Religious Freedom.
Even if it excluded other peoples religious freedom!!! BY the way.
But the Bible in English,German,Spanish, had been printed for many years in Europe before the Pilgrims, or Puritans. Many brave men had all ready died for the cause of printing it in the VULGAR TONGUE.
Just look up on yahoo or google the creation of the printing press! Easy as that!

I am not sure.
I always thought they were too busy traveling in ships to cross the Atlantic to the New World. And once they reached the New World they were too busy settling down to a new life, adjusting to a new beginning as well as fighting for their lives against the Red Indians. So, no time to establish the printing press, I gather!
However, I'll be happy to admit that I was wrong!

I think the printing press was invented by Gutenberg in Europe and the first printing press in the US was imported by Benjamin Franklin.
