TVs in both the U.S. and Canada are using the NTSC format. Now if you took a TV from the United States to Europe, then it may not work very well because most of Europe is on the PAL format (and you would need an outlet converter).

I think Canada already went to a digital broadcast TV transmission system. So, all TVs sold in Canada must have digital tuners that work with the new standard.

The US isn't scheduled to do so until 2009. At that time, a standard TV tuner will not pick up the digital signals and will need a converter that converts the digital channels to the standard analog format.

By law, all TVs sold in the United States must either have a digital tuner or the sales person must inform the potential buyer that it does not. Most of the new TVs these days have both analog and digital tuners, in anticipation of the switch. Eventually, all TVs sold in the US will be digital tuner TVs.

So, if you buy a TV here, ask the salesperson if this will work with the North American digital TV standard. By law, he/she is supposed to tell you whether it will work or not.
