Would you set off a 2" firecracker in your unprotected hand ? Thats almost as bad as firing a blank round point blank into you or someone else body. A distance of 20 ft might be safe but as others have stated the impression you are giving to your target as well as any onlookers is that of a criminal assault with deadly intent, any reaction they might have would be your responsibility (police report, shooting back, self-defense action) you could end up in jail, the hospital, the cemetary.
Discharging a firearm within city limits is still illegal most everywhere. Muzzle flash with blank cartridges is often more intense than conventional ammunition---to give a great flash bang effect. Serious burns can result from contact with burning gunpowder/wadding. In oder for there to be a loud report there has to be some sort of confinement---conventionally the shot charge or slug does this---in blanks a 'paper' wad is pressed into the cartridge. The wad is now a days made of other substances also, the toughest of which can perform just like a slug at close distances. If the muzzle is pressed againt flesh when it is firing a blank the out come would not be appreciably different in effect from a conventional round except for penetration. The actor I remember hearing about was the kung fu guy whowas fired at with a blank round in a real gun that had an obstruction in the barrel (someone had been foolin around with it firinig hand loads of bullets without propellant, one of which failed to clear the muzzle before being put away----the gun handler was directly responsible for not checking the bore prior to it being used in the scene.
A solid bore (starter pistol) blank gun would not fool me nor most people so if all you want to do is give 'em and earache then that's okay but an ear ache won't stop them from pounding you to a pulp now that they are mad.
Also juveniles might tend to think of a blank gun as a toy and injure someone with it unknowingly.
If you feel you need a firearm for protection learn how to use them before getting one--now a requirement in many states.

Hi Deion. Blank guns have killed, blinded, maimed & crippled people. Bruce Lee's son (famous martial arts expert) was killed with a gun loaded with blanks. So was another up and coming male, action movie star. Actually, he was declared brain-dead and his family requested that they 'unplug' the life support and then he died.
In both cases .44 Magnum S & W revolvers were used and both were loaded with blanks. You are probably asking about a small .22 starter/blank gun. Same hazard just less power. Do they sound like a real gun? Yes. Blank ammo is usually available in different degrees of 'bang.'
Will it hurt your hand if you shoot yourself with it? Depending on how hot (or loud) the blank ammo is it would range from a stinging, burning pain to nearly blowing your hand off. In other words, don't try it. Depending on how far it is from your hand and what type of blank/starter gun it is it would probably at least break the skin.
Best.

Blank guns are dangerous; they are really only useful to start a race or sporting event or something on that order. You can put out your eye or lose a finger or something with the darned things. If you are not old enough to buy a shotgun for home defense there are a couple of other things you can do. A spray bottle with ammonia in it will deter even an attacking dog. A squeeze bottle full of pepper sprayed in the face deters everything. A cattle prod will flatten a human. The list goes on.

Really lousy idea.
Blank guns do not sound a lot like real guns, and don't really look a lot like real guns. They are not anywhere near as loud as a real gun and most have solid barrels that cannot be converted to permit a projectile to pass through it.
The actor killed by a blank was firing a blank cartridge in a Colt Detective Special. The 5-in-1 blanks are heavily loaded to sound like real gunfire. The actor pressed the muzzle to his forehead and pulled the trigger. The pressure from the powder gases blew a plug of skull into his brain and he died a couple of days later.
Do not rely on a starter pistol for defense, you will only get yourself hurt. Either get a real firearm and learn to use it, or learn to run fast and fight hard.

Bad idea. You shouldn't own or pull a gun unless you intend to use to possible take another's life to defend your own or the life of a loved one. A blank gun puts you at risk by escalating conflict without you being able to really defend yourself.
If you're 18, then go to Wal-Mart and buy a cheap shotgun. It's the best home defense weapon.

I've heard that, at least some, blank guns are dangerous at point blank range. There was an actor in the 80's who shot himself to death with a mock pistol.
Also if you're getting it with the intention of scaring off burglars, you may provoke them into a gun fight and you'll lose that one.

Get a baseball bat. Blank firing guns are dangerous. They chuck out a hell of a discharge. It'd take your face off easily. Imagine holding a firework in your hand and pointing it at your face. Same thing, mate.

Guns are never a good idea, get an air pistol if you have to have one, it only shoots bb's and appears to be a real gun.
