stretching the muscles when they are cold is a great way to cause injury. stretching before exercise does not decrease the risk of injury. you want to stretch after exercise when the muscles, tendons and ligaments are warm and pliable.

Yes, you're supposed to stretch both before and afterwards. However, it is recommended to do different stretching exercises.

Before your workout, do smaller and less intense versions of your main workout. For example, if you're going to be running, walk briskly for a few minutes. Or, if you're going to be lifting weights, go through the motions with no weights. This prepares your muscles and joints for the workout.

After your workout is when you should do a full stretch (touch the toes, arm circles, etc). Doing this helps prevent your muscles from becoming sore the next day.

I have heard it is better to stretch after your workout. I think before is important too, though. But stretching afterwards is supposed to increase your workout by something like 11% whereas just stretching before is to prevent injury.

when I worked out with my trainer I would do cardio first (I always do that first anyway) and then stretch after I lifted.
