Background info. Six mths ago my Berner got a hold of a popsicle stick left in the yard by my 4 yr old grandson. A Berner being what it is, tried to eat it. but, a piece of the stick was stuck in between her gum and back molar (jagged side down) I had the vet remove it, it was to tight for me to get a hold of it.
The past 2 weeks she has had REALLY bad breath, drooling, yucky looking stuff around the tooth. I took her to the vet today, of course, she is NOT going to be still while she looks at her tooth. I am taking her in tomorrow, will be sedated, teeth cleaned and they will check this tooth. The vet gave her Amoxicillin to take (2 pills every 12 hrs) NO FOOD after midnight, water only.
My question is...Should I give her the meds in the morning? I have to put them in some food to get her to take a pill. Putting the pill in her mouth, closing her mouth and stroking her neck doesn't WORK!! The Vet can't even get her to take a pill this way!! Should I give her the meds in the AM?

I plan on calling the vet in the morning and finding out. That would be the best thing to do. Just wanted your thoughts on it so I can plan ahead:)

I tried to call them on the way home but they were already closed. If, for some reason I can't get a hold of them, I will skip the dose and let them know.

Gee you guys ROCK....I've had 10 answers come thru in 5 mins. Wish I could get my husband to answer me as fast as you guys do:)

NO - absolutely don't give her the meds if you have to give them to her with food.
Since she's being anesthetized, she shouldn't have any food or drink - just like the vet said.
Dogs - and people for that matter - often get nauseous from the anesthetic. She could vomit & asperate the vomit & get pneumonia or worse.
Trust me - I just had surgery & they REALLY emphasized this point to me.
Let the vet know that you didn't give her the pill in the morning.
I'm sure it's no big deal.

Nancy is right - your dog CAN be given meds without food. Your vet just isn't good at it. Just show me a dog that I can't get a pill down! Not possible. LOL
You just have to put it WAY back there, where there is no way they're spittin' it out!

Every 12 hours. If you give her 2 pills at 4 in the morning...give her 2 more at 4 pm. IF thats what the label says. I suggest, if your not sure to call the vet. Its the well being of your Berner

Yeah, call the vet for sure but usually you can simply put them down her throat and have her swallow them and then it is no problem -- the vet might actually give her antibiotics during the procedure so it is wise to ask... but I would not give her any food -- it might be easier for you to give her pills that way but she can take them without it if you just put them in your fingers and put them down her throat -- it DOES work if you do it properly... put them way back and lift her head and blow in her nose gently and she will swallow. She is a St Bernard for goodness sakes, you can bury your arm up to the elbow down her throat just about! It is like a huge well down there. It will prevent her from getting an infection in the jaw/skull from the infection in the gum. I have taken care of people that weren't properly medicated for a tooth abscess that ended up dead -- skull turned to consistancy of corn meal and the infection entered their brain -- if you know how important the administration of the medication is, maybe you will see how simple it is to adminster them. Good luck...

No. With no food on her stomach the Amox may cause stomach distress and vomiting which you don't want before sedation. Be sure to take the meds with you and tell personnel she has not had her scheduled dose of Amox that morning. They will either pill her themselves or give her an injection to insure there is a theraputic level of the antibiotic in her system for the day.

In the morning tell them you DIDN'T give the meds and ask them to give a Penn injection. Then she will be covered until the next day.

Tell them in the morning she has not had her pill for that day yet, and they will take care of it by injection.

if she won't take it without food, i would skip that dose. the food you use could cause her to be sick during the procedure. its an antibiotic and they will be pumping her full of them tomorrow anyway. i would let the vet know that you skipped it tho.

I would give her meds just before midnight. That way she's medicated and anything she's eaten falls in the before midnight time frame. hope this helps Good Luck and God Bless.
