i wouldn't get the smallest for a 7 year old only because the dog can get hurt also they are not as much "fun" for a 7 year old because they are not that much into fetch or whatever.
at least that's what i think
get a cairn terrier or a west highland terrier they are easy to take care of and they are super cute!
oh by the way the smallest dog is a chihuahua

Are you asking what is the smallest dog to give your 7 year old child?
If it is what you are asking, you should stay away from small/toy breeds because the child may end up hurting the dog. Look into medium size dogs, it will be better suited in a family with a young child.

According the a few websites I just looked at, the smallest natural dog breed is the Chichuahua, but there are unnatural dog breeds such as the teacup terrier,like some of the others mentioned by others. According to Guiness World Records, the smallest dog currently is a yorkshire terrier.

what do you mean "from my 7 year old"?
do you mean what's the smallest dog breed that's suitable for your 7 year old child?
i would suggest that you get her a dog that is a bit bigger than the smallest dog breeds in the world which would be a chihuahua or a yorkie.
but i think a maltese or a shih tzu would be good.

A teacup chihuahua is the smallest dog but would probably be too fragile for a child. Why not get something like a shitzu (I seriously can't believe I don't know how to spell that) or laso apso or maltese?

Smallest breed dog would be Chihuahua. In fact they are the only naturally occurring "toy breed" in the canine world. Others have been bred to be small, tea cup size or whatever, but the Chi is the real deal.

I have done research on HUNDREDS of dogs (I am considering getting a dog). I could be considered an expert. Chihuahua's are definately the worlds smallest dogs.
