You can go into the army, but don't violate their don't ask don't tell policy. If you are gay let that be your business and your business alone. You can't portray yourself or your sexual orientation while you are in uniform. Just keep your mouth closed and you will be fine. Don't ask don't tell.

Nope, it's not. But given the amount of testosterone running around it might be wiser not to be gay until you leave.
Whilst I was in the Navy... go on, get the jokes out of the way... I knew three self confessed lesbians and several well and truly out of the closet homosexuals.
The attitude to them is precisely one of 'can you do your job?' If the answer is yes, no one gives a sh!t what team you play for, if you catch my drift.
Used to be different, gay would get you kicked back to Civvy Street very quickly not very long ago, but now there's no discrimination on the grounds of sexual preference.

No.. the army is on a "don't ask don't tell" basis. If you come out singing Queen's "Somebody to Love" wearing rainbow shorts and parading around your barracks, you will be honorably discharged from the army for violating the "don't ask don't tell" policy. However, given our situation in Iraq, I doubt they would discharge you.

The Military is not a social proving ground.

Although it's often used that way...
