with the .243 I have harvested good sized mule deer at reasonable distances (500 yds+or-) with proper bullet placement I'm sure you could take small black bear or like animals. but with the .223 I have never hunted animals, besides faral dogs.

I’ve several different calibers. Including the .223 and the .243.

Both have 4-16x70 varmint scopes. Never used the .223 for anything more than varmints.
Find it to be extremely deadly out to about 350yds. Never shot deer with it. However depending on how good the shooter is have no doubt it will put a deer down under 200yds. I have rancher friends that use a .243 for deer and antelope out to about 400 yds using a good rest and has always been very effective for them. Although at that range I use a higher caliber.

Again really depends on how good the shooter is.

The stock answer has always been that the .243 is minimum for whitetail, whilst the .223 is best left for varmints & such, and while a few superb hunters doubtless take elk with a .223, why minimise the odds against you and risk losing a wounded animal? unless you absolutely cannot tolerate any appreciable recoil, a 7mm-08, 7x57, 6.5x55, or .even 257 would be more versatile. As Elmer Keith might have put it, "better to use a .458 for woodchuck than a .22 for elephant"

Humanely? The .223 is a varmint caliber so the largest game I would shoot is peccary (known down south as 'javalina') and the largest varmint would be coyote. I've regularly taken wild turkey with one using ball ammo and making neck shots.

The .243 within range is smallest deer caliber. So I would say the largest game for it is the Whitetail deer. I've taken deer with this one and shot-placement is critical. Of course, I am of the mind-set that when one hunts it is always about shot-placement but that one should ALWAYS use enough gun.

Best.

A deer and most people will say a .223 is too small for deer.... that a .243 is the smallest for a deer you should use.

.223 - varmints, maximum coyote
.243 - white tail deer

In all honestly, it depends on the shooter. I have dropped a huge Deer and an Elk with a .223 shot. I have seen others fill up the woods, and a deers rear-end with lead and never drop anything!
