Maybe you have an answer for this, maybe you don't. I'm a 23 year old male working in a fast-paced high-tech business where I am an INTERN and most of the employees have advanced degrees and have years of experience. The good part of my job is I'm kind of treated like an employee...not the "go get me some coffee intern" that you might be thinking of...really, it's not like that at all. But still, I feel that I am being excluded and undermined because of my age/lack of wisdom/etc. It doesn't help that I look like I'm 18 years old (as made apparent when I tried to buy an "M" rated video game (god of war 2) and needed to show ID!

What do I do? Sit here and ride it out for another 5 years until I can get some respect?

It's called "paying your dues". Sounds like you're doing fine, or they'd be giving you a hard time. Tekkies tend to be less socially adept than some others, so they're probably just not paying attention. You'll be fine if you don't let your ego get you in trouble.

Try to remember this when you're the one with the experience.

Its always hard starting a new job until you get used to the work and the people. You sound like a decent enough guy, most of them will come around once they see what sort of person you are and also what work you are capable of doing. Keep true to yourself and others will see the real you and love you for it.
