I'm sorry to hear of your situation. But remember that anything is possible you just have to keep faith and that God has a plan for your son.

How sad for you, and how desperate for attention (or to die) was he. There are no answers any of us can give, because even doctors won't know what his future is. Brain cells do grow, but not in the way you are hoping. This isn't like scratching a finger and new skin comes back.
He may or may not be a vegetable, but he will always be the son that you love, and you can get that message across to him every day. Touch him, be with him, read to him. He can hear, and he will be able to feel calm inside, knowing on the outside it is a very scary thing that he did.
Don't blame yourself or him. Just move on in love, and take care of yourself so that you can then take care of him in your loving way. There will be many support systems for you; find them. And many medical support systems that your doctor can recommend. God bless you.

I am sorry this tragedy had to happen to your family. I will pray for your son. I cannot tell you whether your son will recover or not, but I can tell you not to give up hope. My son had traumatic brain injury when he was 5. His doctor's didn't know whether it would repair itself or not. He is 13 now and is capable of making straight A's. I don't know if his damage was as severe as your son's, but it was severe. He had seizures, OCD, ADHD, tourette's and mood disorders, major depression. I prayed and prayed he would get better or they would at least be able to treat his symptoms. Both have happened. He has gotten a lot better and medication controls what has not repaired itself yet. GLORY BE TO GOD for his recovery. I wish you all the best.

My son's doctor- A pediatric neurologist at Vanderbilt Hosp. in Nashville gave us much hope. My son has a disorder called P.A.N.D.A.S. Pediatric Neurological Disorder Associated with Strep. His immune system actually attacked healthy living brain cells when they mistook them for Streptococcal Bacteria. It damaged a great deal of his brain that deals with Fantasy/Reality, Impulsiveness, and mood disorders. He has made a fantastic recovery. He hasn't had a seizure in 7 yrs. and we have continually reduced the amount of medication for the other symptoms over the yrs.

Do NOT Give up!!!!! Talk to a specialist. Your doctor should be keeping you better informed. If your unhappy with him/her seek another doctor. Go to whoever or wherever the best treatment is available. I am fortunate enough to live near some of the best in the world.

Just to get things straight, I am not a doctor. However I do a lot of reading and I have read before that if there is sufficient healthy cells in vital locations in the brain, it will relearn (re-wire) itself with time. It will take a long time and a lot of therapy. It will almost be like teaching a newborn again. Why did he do this???

I think there is hope. As long as he continues to show improvement, even if it is slow, then that is good. If he goes six months without any significant improvement, then the chances of him recovering to normal go down.

He will never return to being the same as he was before the accident. The fact that he is young is a good thing. Kids tend to bounce back fast. The doctors should have told you a deadline. Usually, the deadline is six months.

I will pray for your son.

THIS IS A TRUE STORY.

When I was a student nurse I helped care for a 9yr old who received a severe head injury by playing 'Chicken' on the road and got struck by a car. He needed burr holes in his skull to relieve pressure on this brain, a ventilator to breathe via tracheotomy and was CONFIRMED BRAIN DEAD by 3 top paediatric consultants.

His ventilator was switched off. He breathed on his own - dilemma. He was giving physio several times a day to prevent pressure sores and fed through a gastric tube.

He plodded on - his parents wouldn't give up. ( where there's life there's hope). I then cared for him on the children’s ward, witnessed his body fitting and his body fighting a chest infection. He was closely monitored - never moved voluntarily BUT when his Nana visited his heart rate raised when she spoke.

His parents trained with health professionals to provide all his needs at home.

He was discharged home.

4 MONTHS LATER HE WALKED ONTO THE CHILDRENS WARD!

His walking was not perfect, but he was trying to talk. He was able to swallow but unable to feed himself - yet!

The paediatricians were completely amazed and said that young people have amazing powers of recovery.

I put his recovery down to his parents. If they had accepted what they had been told he would have died because the Medical team were reluctant to feed him - they thought it was prolonging his death.

Now I don't know how well his recovery is to date but DON'T GIVE UP ON YOUR BABY!

I wish you Love , Luck and your Son quality of life!

Jac

30 years ago a cousin of mine was shot near his heart & spine by a bullet fired by a raging drunk. He was lucid when he came to but paralyzed from the chest down. Later his heart stopped beating and on two occasions they brought him back. He lost a lot of his vision. He was comatose for a while and they didn't know if he could hear music. He came too and he's continued to live.
God bless you.

I am so sorry to know about your son's crucial condition. But prayer is the best shield against all trials. Do have a heart to heart talk with GOD and I am sure, HE will grant your wish to keep your son live a normal life again. He will never say no to those who believe in HIM.
GOD BLESS THE CHILD.
