I spent a year and a half in Federal prison. As I am educated, I wrote my own appeal rather than pay 8k for a lawyer who didn't or wouldn't really help.

Once other prisoners learned that I could write effectively, I assisted with appeals, parole packets and helped with college coursework for guards and other prisoners. I led a Toastmasters International club to help young prisoners learn how to express themselves in a positive and effective manner, weightlifted, played cards, and worked in the prison carpentry shop. Other prisoners spent lots of time playing cards, sleeping, getting in trouble, watching TV, radio, etc.

Fed prison isn't as bad as state. However, I tell you this: it is so hard to get a good job or a job at all after prison that many go back to crime. I have been working so hard, but no luck for a job. Instead, I work for me now. Sad thing, but once you go to prison in this nation no one wants to let you start over. Remember that when you see people who need a job.

It depends where they are housed. If minimum security then they are able to mingle with others and have time to take classes or do various chores. It really depends on the prison and the guidelines set by the state as to what they are allowed to do. Other than that, I suppose they read, play cards, sleep, eat and basically try to keep from getting into more trouble.

I have an Uncle that read Louis L'Amour western novels while he was in prison. I haven't been to jail for long periods of time so I am just going on others experiences. My goal is to not ever go back to jail.

If they let you, you can lie in your cell and quietly go through a flashback of your whole life. I also read all of Word of Honor, and some of Pet Sematary. Your family may visit you, and look at you like a zoo monkey behind glass!

Make weapons, ask for toilet paper, make weapons, ask for trust account withdrawl forms, make weapons, ask for pen fillers, make weapons, ask for their meds, make weapons, ask for sick call slips, make weapons, ask for soap, make weapons, ask if they can run hot water for the entire tier, make weapons, make pruno, drink pruno, make weapons, make more pruno and pass it to their homies, make weapons, stick weapons up their butt, go to yard, walk around the yard funny because they have a shank in their butt, yank the shank and stick it in someones neck then prone out on the ground so you can go to adseg and pass info, go to adseg and pass info to the shotcallers, while you're there make another weapon for when you get out of adseg and go back to the yard, ask for toothpowder, ask for more toilet paper, make weapons, go to law library, make weapons, eat dinner, complain about not enough desert on the tray, drink pruno with dinner, make weapons, take apart cd player to make a tattoo gun, make another weapon, give tattoos to homies, take a break from making weapons because you have successfully made 23 righteous peices and passed them to everyone you were told to via the kite that was passed under your door three weeks ago, start sweating because you heard that there was some metal that came up missing in the dining hall that you work in and you know they will come looking for it in your unit and you are hoping that all of the 23 soldiers you passed it to can hold their mud, sleep, eat breakfast, ask for toilet paper, if you have time think about an escape plan, make a phone call, take a shower, play dominoes, play cards, polish your sink and toilet. That is just a few things inmates do to occupy themselves in prison.
