Okay, so I love spiders and am always trying to learn more when I can. Your question seriously stumped me, it was driving me crazy so I looked it up in my field guide....no luck. I looked on line and finally found something: they hang in the center with their head down because when something startles them, instinct tells them to flee so they attach some silk to the center of their web and essentially "bungee jump" off the web and then crawl to safety. So I guess that makes sense to me, hope that answers your question.

Perhaps gravity would be something to look into. The spider can move faster in that down direction, but suppose he gets a bug on the upper side of the web?
I guess he can move upwards just as fast and he knows which web not to step on or he will get stuck..

The spiders head has no neck which mean that it has to move its whole abdimen, in doing so would break the web line. Having so many eyes, the spider can look around withou having to lift its abdimen and break the web line.

Isn't the gland that makes the web in its back side? So if it's hanging on to a strand still, it would have to be facing down? Probably not much help, but maybe? Good luck finding the answer.

The head is the heavier part of the body, so it gets a better balance and no stress by keeping it down, hanging from the legs.

because the silk/web that they manufacture comes out of the back of their abdomen, and in order to catch bugs below or around the web they need to be ready to drop down to capture them.

maybe he's waiting for that dumb fly to quit moving and move in for the kill. or maybe he's waiting to finish his web, because the web material comes from his butt. his here does not reference a male spider, just a spider in general

Thats because the silk spinners are located near their rear end. I suppose it would be rather hard to stand upright with a rope tied to your waist or your foot or your butt ;3

Web comes from back end.

If you hung upside-down, blood would rush to your head. But a spider's head isn't empty ;-)
