Suggest to the interviewer that you had heard there would be a potential opening coming up within their organization (which you unfortunately didn't realize that it would take them this long to make a decision as to what type of person they were going to replace such a valuable employee with), and that you wanted to make yourself 100% totally available immediately to them should they decide to ask you to start immediately! If that doesn't work, start laughing uncontrollably and admit to them that you're just a lazy shmuck, and every now and then you quit whatever you're doing to just sit around and do nothing all day!

Yes they will check if you say college. You would be better off saying you were self employed but your business did not do well. That they cant really check out.
