i have a 5 month old silky terrier x jack russell. when is a pup no longer considered a pup and able to have adult food? there are lots more varieties of adult food than puppy food. i live in a country town and do not have access to large supermarkets, so i do not have the choices that you get at larger shops. there is only one flavour puppy food, but lots of adult flavours.but i dont want to feed him the wrong thing and make him sick.he also eats dried food, and occasionally fresh cooked meat.

Dump the canned food entirely and stick with the dry kibble and the cooked meat.

Contrary to popular belief canned food is actually very good for your dog. The good quality varieties such as Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup,Merrick contain a lot of high quality meat and are very nutritious. They aren't mostly water. They also do NOT promote tooth decay or any other tooth issues (nor does dry food prevent tooth problems).
You can switch your puppy to adult food any time after 6 months of age.

Puppy food has alot of fatty nutrients that are essential for growth and development. Personally, if I was going to used canned food in the diet, I would wait until a year or at least 8 months. Dogs don't really care about flavor like humans do, they are just happy to have food (especially a treat like canned food).

If you feed your dog has reached his full size and strength, then go ahead with the adult food. And, honestly, dogs don't ever NEED puppy food and will be very healthy if brought up on adult food, puppy food just gives them a little bit of a head start.

Really there is no reason to feed canned food because it is mostly water but if you want to feed it, you can give a little adult canned food to your pup it will not hurt him.
I do hope if you are using canned, you are mixing it with a dry puppy food.

i give my 3 mth old poochi a tbsp or so of wet lamb and rice adult food mixed with his iams dry pup food every am. my 2 big dogs eat the wet and dry food plus i give them a cold cut sandwich in the afternoon and whatever i make for supper they get some too even the pup just in smaller portions.he is healthy and growing well.it was hard to just feed him pup food as the other dogs have their dish full of dry lamb and rice on both floors. the only thing you have to watch for is a little runny stools so you have to introduce new foods gradually to your dog.

You should NEVER have an adult dog on 100% canned food 24/7....it is completly bad for them for multiple reasons. Supermarkets have VERY cheap food; try ordering online at petsmart.com and getting somegood stuff.

Dry food is best for dogs. Wet food promotes tooth decay.
