The open source community has a different philosophy about software. Many developers participate for the love of writing great software, others are assigned from commercial companies to support the open source projects (for example, IBM may employ a few people to support the Apache software team or a company may donate financially to an open source project). The goal is not necessarily to make money, but to write great software (note though that not all open software is great, but that is one of the intentions).
