Funny how everybody claims that you are talking out of your butt...
I have actually had a recruiter tell me that he could make "anything on my record go away"....
Too bad for him that I'm not a criminal and don't need his magic eraser....

You might want to re-read your source there. Making waivers not required for things like smoking dope once years ago, a few extra traffic tickets, etc is not the end of the world. In fact what they said is not that they want to lower the bar, but that they want to standardize the rules across all teh services rather than leaving it to some murky subjective process for officers in recruiting command. That would be a good & fair thing.
There are a very few that get waivers for crazy stuff, never violent though, and that's unfortunate. I really find it hard to believe we need to take anyone like that rather than making it almost impossible for the kid who took ridlin when they were 12 or had lisik eye surgery in high school.
What's your point though? Why are you so happy about calling it desperate times? It's not for starters, but even if it were, why would you think that's a poor reflection on others? If anything I'd say it really is too bad if we find ourselves in a position of taking such folks cause the majority of the population is too big a wuss to do their God given responsibility as a citizen of this country.

Ex cons with a violent past are exactly the type of people we need in the military, after all our servicemen and women have a violent present. Murderers and phsycos too, they wont freeze under fire, another thing we need. Battery, yep we need that too, they know how to handle themselves in hand to hand combat if it comes to that. Believe it or not, some of societies worst people can be our nations best soldiers. During Viet Nam it was "go to war or go to jail" and even then some of those people were the best you could ask for. My former command seargant major had a troubled past yet he made his way up through the ranks only to be killed in Iraq. So before you condemn the standards, know what you are talking about. By the way, we take people who can't spell as well, so even you can join.

I think the army recruiting process must have a personal screening in the applicants' past history. It's not likely for cons but perhaps a few unemployed pros to join the forces.

This is not a new course of action for the military. When I joined (volunteered) in 1973, I knew a lot of guys that either had their choice of jail or the military. They have Parole Officers now instead of Drill Sargent's.

The military does a background check before they let any one in. Why do people keep b*tching about the military? They are the ones supporting our country and protecting us. Everyone goes through alot of training, and deserve the chance to support our country even if they did make a mistake in the past. All these people who judge the army and disrespect the people in it don't even have what it takes to be in. I am so tired of every one looking down on the army.... there are people 18 yrs and above in Iraq and Afghanistan right now away from their families, and friends getting shot and and even worse... so have some respect

Violent tendencies need to be redirected to positive outlets. The military teaches self-control, and how to choose one's battles both active duty and afterward in civilian life.

It's sad to see someone of your age suffering from reading comprehension disability. I didn't read what YOU did. Maybe you should knock off doing those illicit drugs. Seems your brain is fried.
