Look for a really unique Christmas ornament.

I would wait til I get there...you just might notice that they need something and you wouldn't have to lug a gift around. And then you could always do the giftcard for a nice dinner or a bottle of wine or something if you're stumped.

My guess is that they know you're spending a lot on the trip and it would probably be okay if you didn't put a big emphasis on a gift. They're giving you a place to stay and may not be thinking of a big gift either.

Have a wonderful Christmas!

Why not send them a gift certificate for a favourite restaurant in the area or perhaps tickets to a play or movie they'd like .

I think the thing they'd probably appreciate the most is you helping with dishes or getting food on the table or perhaps getting out of their hair for a few hours . If they have kids perhaps you could take the kids out for an afternoon to give mum and dad a break.

Call up the florist in that area or find one online and send a christmas arrangement or fruit basket to arrive before you do just to say thanks. That's really nice of them to include you in their celebrations , you and your boyfriend are very lucky to have such welcoming friends.
