I am an extremely well qualified candidate for NF (nuclear field). I received a 90 on the ASVAB and I have all of the high school class qualifications. I am currently being considered for the NROTC scholarship for OSU (to hopefully be a nuke officer). The only bad thing that I have against me is that I am colorblind. I failed the colorblind test at MEPS during my DEP physical. Is their a way that I could get a waiver so that I could serve in the Navy (at least enlisted) as a nuke, or in any other field that requires "normal color perception."

you may not get a waiver. those standards are in place for a reason. how would you feel if you got some shipmates KILLED because you couldn't distinguish between the red and the green wire?

you are not DQd from serving, only DQdfrom those ratings that require Normal color vision.

If correctly identifying colors will be a needed part of the job..such as colors of wired for an electrician or technician or the color of lights on a control panel...there is no waiver for people are color blind. Even if you were to memorize every possible item or wire, there is still too great of a chance of your missing a warning light or failing to identify a wire, basically leading to a situation that could potentially harm your shipmates and/or damage military equipment. If you are determined to serve, you will have to choose another field to work in.

When I applied for an NROTC scholarship over 2 years ago I failed my DoDMERB medical exam because of a shoulder injury. I was automatically considered for a waiver and I got it. If you get a waiver, that gets you in the NROTC program, but when you apply for service selection, your options may be limited. I've heard of people having all kinds of eye trouble who want to go aviation, but I've never heard of anyone having trouble getting nuke because of their eyes.

While you wait for your waiver to be processed, don't expect a response too quickly. Like everything else in the military, you will have to hurry up and wait... and then wait some more. I would say you are likely to get a waiver allowing you to be in the Navy, but I would double check with the nuke program if you are really set on that path. Otherwise you could end up in a community you have no interest in.

I doubt it. My grandfather was a pilot who was colorblind. He continued to fly until the Navy caught up with him and put him in ships.

Today, colorblindness is usually a disqualifier for military service.

I understand though. I wanted to reenlist, but was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and could not.

Are you "color blind" or color impaired. There are a lot of other test that can be done to determine which you are.
If you are trully "color blind" you will not be able to join any branch...if you are color impaired...you just will not be able to get into everything. I did 20 being color impaired, never hurt me in my AFSC (MOS)
Good luck
