Would we count the M-14 as an assault rifle? That's good for 800 yards, so is the FN-FAL. I think the M-14 has the edge on accuracy though, that's why Carlos Hathcock's spotter carried one, and used it effectively when 'Gunny' had too many targets to engage with his bolt gun (Winchester 70?).
None of the 223s are effective past 5-600 yards and the M4 is even worse because the short barrel robs the wimpy 5.56x45 of the velocity it needs to tumble and fragment, so it's only good for 2-300 yards. I don't care what the Army teaches their people, they tell them what they need them to believe so they will do what they are told. As a weapon system designer I know about getting the job done and the 223 is useless at moderate ranges against anything other than rabbits. It's also useless inside 10m. That's why the USMC has been pulling M14s out of stores and it's why the British are still using GPMGs (which the US now has as the M240 IIRC) instead of the LSW. Putting a hole in a piece of paper is NOT effective against men.

I would say that the M-14 would be highly accurate at extended ranges, in the hand of a skilled shooter I bet 1000 yards is possible with it. The M-14 is still used as a secondary sniper rifle by the US Army and USMC so must be quite good. I saw quite a few set up as such in Iraq recently. As for the M-16 and it's variants I would not personally attempt any 800 yard shots but a trained sniper would probably be capable of making such a shot. I have on several occasion attempted 400 yards shots on a military range with an M16A2 and hit a few of them.

The first answer was correct, the M-14 is a main battle rifle not an assault rifle.
I recommend you read Boston's Gun Bible, by Boston T. Party. The newer version talks extensively about the M1A/M-14 style rifle as well as the FAL among others. It's really a great book and fun to read.
Also check out http://www.fredsm14stocks.com there are articles, columns and the rifleman section.

Common definitions of "assault rifle" do not include the M14 as it doesn't have a pistol grip, and hence is a safe "sporting arm", while something like the FN-FAL, by having an evil pistol grip.
If it is a select fire weapon like the (real) M4, M16, or M14, FN-FAL etc. it is a battle rifle.
Once you open it to "select fire battle rifles", you also need to look at German and Russian rifles from WWII as some of them used some rather large rifle rounds intended for bolt guns.

don't be a douche bag fatefinger that's a valid question. the main effective intermidet around i know it the 7.62x39 I actual have in no way seen a 6.5 part by way of part to a 7.sixty 3 till now so the 7.sixty two sounds greater effective and from what i understand the 6.5 became made to bridge the hollow between the 7.sixty two and the 5.fifty six.

The two (2)* longest shots were made during combat with a Winchester Model 70 in 308 caliber on two enemy soldiers at 1500 yards, but of course it was a bolt action, not a semi-auto Rifle.*..... Unfortunately they are not here to tell about it.*

The M16 and M4 has a range of 800 meters for area target and 550 meters point target..... the M14 had the shorter range due to a heavier bullet and a slower muzzle velocity as well.....
