Between the apt stove and vent/fan above, I have a blank wallspace about a 2 and a half feet square. It can get heated as the stove/oven-vent points upward . . . and it can get greasy from cooking. Do you have any ideas what I can put there? What do people normally put there (is that what's called a back splash??).

You wouldn't want to waste your money installing a backsplash in an apartment.
Ask your landlord if you can put up some plexiglass over the area; and under it, put:
pretty wallpaper
a poster
inspirational sayings
printed fabric
wrapping paper
etc.
PS: I have wallpaper behind my stove, so we put plexiglass over it - cleans very easily!

The Plexiglas is a good idea. But if you want something more unusual... go to a home improvement store and have them cut you a piece of tin or galvanized aluminum or even a nice piece of copper (depending on how much you want to spend) to put up there.

You could also use a piece of colored glass or mirror.

You have multiple options... have fun and go funky!

you can make a backsplash that can be removed. get a piece of plywood or MDF cut to the space and pick out some inexpensive tiles and tile the wood. get a hanger kit for the back and hang it up! make sure you drill your screw into the stud to hang it though, it will be a bit heavy.
