I would recommend a bed and breakfast. You can find one at www.bedandbreakfast.com There are some in Manhattan, but I prefer the ones in Staten Island. Staten island is only a (free) ferry ride away from Manhattan. That is where I always stay when I travel to NYC. The ferry is fun because it takes you past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Rooms for bed and breakfasts in Staten Island start at 50+ per night, and you get a hot breakfast included! Then you can spend all your money in the city. Plus, it is easier (for me) to sleep without all the city noises outside my window or hotel room door. One bed and breakfast in SI offers panaramic views of the Manhattan skyline. I've never stayed there but I am considering it for an upcoming stay. At the website I mentioned, you can check out traveler reviews too and get a better idea of the place you are looking at staying. Those have always been very helpful for me. Message me with any questions! Good luck and have fun in NYC!!!
PS... THEY EVEN HAVE SOME YOUTH HOSTELS FOR REALLY CHEAP ON THIS SITE!

If you want cheap go to the boros or New Jersey. In Manhattan you'll be hard pressed to find any room for less than a $100. You could try the Pennsylvania Hotel on 34th Street across the street from Madison Square Garden. There it's less expensive than most Manhattan places. As far as Jon Stewart, you need to find the studio where he films and give the public relations department a call.

1) Besides trying searching hotels, try renting a room in someone's apartment. Many new yorkers rent their apartment or one of their bedrooms for short time and usually cost you less and no hotel taxes and fees are involved. Just a thought. You can search for short term rental or vacational at this site. It is the most popular site here in New York:
www.craigslist.com
2) Go to Daily show website to find out about tickets. And yes, they are on stricke

If you really want cheap in New York City, with an excellent location, try the YMCA. I thought my friend was crazy when she suggested it, but we've stayed there a few times and love it. The price is hard to beat and the location is walking distance to all my favorite places (Central Park, Lincoln Center, etc). Check it out!

Forget the Daily Show, the writers are on strike. All the talk shows are on re-runs.
