I was involved in an accident yesterday. Nationwide insurance is saying they never received my payment, even though I have receipts. Their position is that they will not settle my claim. What agency can I go to in order to make them honor the policy?

You need to contact the Insurance Commissioner in the State in which you live, or the state in which you took out your policy. Nationwide is within its rights if it has no record of the policy.

There are (sometimes frequent) cases of insurance agents who collect premiums for the company, and then never pass it on. I hope that is not the case because then you are in for quite a ride.

Every state agency that oversees insurance (it's called something slightly different in every state) has an 800 number in the phone book. Or, there should be a general information number for state agencies.

If the accident just happened yesterday- then you need to report the claim to the claims department. As part of their investigation into the claim - they will do a coverage investigation. This includes having you give them copies of the receipts. Getting a statement from you and your agent. After they have completed the coverage investigation - if there is no coverage for the incident - then they will send you a denial in writing stating the reason.

Once you get that written confirmation stating why they are denying coverage for the incident - then you can file an insurance department complaint if you disagree. To file a complaint now would be just jumping the gun and would not get you anywhere.

If they cancelled your policy due to nonpayment of premium, then they cancelled it. I have no idea what you have for a receipt - usually it's a cancelled check, and if it was cancelled/received AFTER the date of policy cancellation, that does NOT reinstate a policy.

You need to send the declination letter with your complaint, in writing, to your state insurance commissioner. They'll review it and let you know.

Meanwhile, since you're apparently driving around uninsured, I strongly suggest you buy a policy tonight or tomorrow.
