I am from India and currently in US for my studies. On a whim and on my friend's invitation I decided to go to London for Thanksgiving.

Since it was a last minute decision, I applied for a UK Visa completed all online formalities and sent my documents which were received by the NY British Consulate-General on Oct 29.
In their mail they said they will take 5 working days.

Its been 7 days now and I haven't yet heard anything from them. I called the embassy on their number but their number has a stock recorded message and no helpful pointers.

Has anyone had experience with NY British Embassy? How long does the mail-in application visa actually take?

I am getting nervous as my journey date is fast approaching and I seem to have to have no way of getting updates on my application status!

the 5 days are for usual visa,since you are in the US studying and from another country, it will take a while longer to check some basics with the immigration in the US;
do not worry, if you are in compliance with immigration, which i am sure you are, you will hear from the UK soon enough, please do not get nervous, relax, you will get your visa and go to London.(save the money from the calls,and wait calmly)

Five working days means don't count Saturday, Sunday and anything that could be constructed as a public holiday. Did they say "5 working days processing"? That can mean add at least another 2 days if we're sending it via post. Are you at home alot? It could have already been delivered but no one was home to sign for it and as a result it could have been dropped off to the nearest post office. Give them a call but have your credit card ready (if I'm correct they charge you for the priveldge).

5 working days means 5 days excluding Saturday, sunday, and holidays. It's also 5 days till they mail it back to you, so allow a couple of days for that. If there's any problems with your application that will also add time.
