My sister and I and my dad have to leave for school and work at 7 in the morning. My mom has to leave for work at 8 in the morning, and my dog is left alon until 12, when my dad comes home for lunch for an hour. Then my dad leaves at one and me and my sister come home at three, but I read somewhere that if you leave a dog alon for a long period of time your abusing him? Am I an animal abuser? I feed my dog every night, and never hit him, but as I said before, I read somewhere that your an abuser if you leave pets alone for long periods of time. Oh, and my mom comes home at 3 with me and my sister.

I play with my dog all the time, and everytime we travel I take him with me. He has dry food and water in my kitchen, and he has access to it whenever he wants. My dad probably does play with him and let him out, but Im in school so I dont know. Im pretty sure, though, that he does.

Millions of dogs stay home alone for 8 to 10 hours a day. People have to work or their dogs won't get fed. Most dogs sleep all day while you're not there. You aren't abusing your dog.

I think you are misunderstanding the meaning of "long periods of time." If you are only leaving your dog home alone for a few hours at a time, you are definitely not abusing your dog. If that were the case, than millions of Americans would be abusing their pets every day. Some dogs do have separation anxiety, but even they have to be left alone sometimes. Leaving a dog alone for a couple of hours at a time, even several is a good thing to do to create a sense of independence for your pet. Hope this has helped.

If this is a family dog, then it's a family responsibility. Your dad seems to be doing the right thing by letting him out at lunch.

And as one poster stated, millions of dogs are left home alone all day.

I leave for work at 7:00, come home for an hour and let my dog out to go pottie, then home by 4:30 and we spend the rest of the evening with him. He's one of the most happiest dogs that I know. I would not even consider him to be abused.

I think that what some people say about leaving them alone for long periods of time, they may be referring to days/weeks and w/o food or water. That's abuse.

No. You are not abusing your dog. If he is a puppy, that can be taken as abusing but only because puppies need alot of attention. When your dad comes home for an hour does he pet/play with the dog? When you get home around 3 do you pet and play with him? If you completely ignore your dog at all times then yes you are abusing him. But if the dog still gets attention than no. You have nothing to worry about.

No you are not abusing your dog. It is ok to leave him alone during the day while you are at school as long as he is not still a very young puppy. Dogs are like humans when they are very young they need a lot of attention. As they get older they understand being alone for periods of time . Since you are on a set schedule he know when you are going to leave and when you are comming home. Bet he meets you at the door when you get home. And no they do not sleep all day long. They do sleep a lot but not all day. He will get up and walk around if there is a windo he can reach he will spend time looking out it. Just be sure to give him lots of attention when you get home.

It sounds like you are doing a good job with your dog. A long period of time generally means about 6 hours +. I try not to leave them by themselves for more than 5 hours at most and usually have a friend or pay a neighbor kid to check up on them if I think I will be gone longer. But no, you are not abusing you pet.

Are you kidding me some people have to be gone all day while they work. You only abusing your dog if you don't take care of him, or let him starve, or never have anything to do with him, or beat it. It sounds like he is only alone for about 4 hours, that's not a long time. He is probably sleeping most of that time and doesn't even know your gone. That by no stretch of the imagination is abuse.

I surely wouldn't consider a 4 hour alone period anything like abusive. On the other hand, 1-2 days along for an indoor dog would be a little mean.

If the only bad thing thats happening is you leaving it alone for long periods of time its not considered abuse but if you ignore it and hit it (which i know you don't) then it would be abuse. just make sure that you play with your dog tonnes when you are home! :-) another way to check is simply see if when you come home its tail wags or does it go down and run away from you? hope this helps!

No, negligence and your life are 2 different things. Sometimes people dont have the lifestyle that is suitable for a dog but leaving the dog alone long enough for you to go to school is fine. As long as you are giving your pup plenty of love & attention when you are there, I'm sure he doesn't feel abused!

No worries :0)

No you don't abuse your dog. I leave my cat and dog at home all day long, like 9 hrs or more. They ALWAYS have food and water, and they are not left out in the weather. They have a comfortable bed to sleep on and toys to play with. Even though they are left alone, they are not like a child and require supervision, mine don't anyway. Your dogs don't even stay alone as long as mine do. Don't worry about it.
