I have read that hormone based birth control (most pills, patches and rings) can increase the risk of blood clots, primarily in the legs and in some cases in the brain, leading to strokes. Are there any ways of decreasing this risk without dropping the pills altogether? Any foods/lifestyles to use or avoid??

Fish oil and garlic are both good blood thinners that will reduce the risk of blood clots. There are stacks of others that you can find in a web search for "blood thinners".

You would not want to smoke while taking the pill, however, if you really want to decrease your risk you should stop taking the pill altogther.
There have been some studies that suggest that progesterone only forms of contraceptives are less likely to cause blot clots than estrogen forms, but I think that finding has since been challenged.
Aspirin has been shown to help prevent blood clots, but you'd want to talk to your doctor before starting a daily aspirin regimen.

stay well hydrated, dont sit for long periods, keep inflammation at a minimum i.e. ingest fish or fish oils regularly. Try a supplement like natto kinase which dissolves the fibrin back bone of blood clots. Don't smoke. Perform regular exercise. Avoid sugars.

in an otherwise healthy woman the risk for clots is insignificant...but, if you smoke at all, the risk goes up dramatically, and if you consume alcohol in large amounts the risk goes up again. So don't smoke, and don't drink to excess and you won't have a problem while taking the pill.
