They certainly can - and they can hover in the air by flapping their wings between 15 - 80 times per second, depending on species. Imagine that - 80 times per second - that's a lot of flapping!

Yes they can. We had hummingbirds outside my dorm in Arizona and outside my house in Virginia (plus one or two here in Ohio) and I've been close enough almost to reach out and touch them, and I've watched them fly backwards. They have to...they go in to get the nectar from the flowers and then they sort of back out, like a truck, when they're done.
