I need you to help me with what would you do
You breed dogs and sell them. And 3 weeks latter one family calls you and said it's dead .First it is no fault of yours. You had puppies vet checked and no health problem. Both mom and dad were checked for health defects .It is not dead from any health defects .Was brought into the vet with blood in the mouth and dead.Your own vet talks to the vet of the family and all they can say is could be blunt force, poision, fall Now what do you do?
1 give them another puppy?
2 give them back 100 refund?
3 %? refund?
or just say I'm so sorry and no more? or do you have any other option? what would you do if this happen to you?

Ask for an autopsy... and be willing to pay for it... I NEED to know what happened.

From the general gist of your question.. obviously they were negligent in some fashion. No, I would NOT give them NOR sell them another puppy. No I would not refund any money.

Frankly, I'd be pretty busy trying to keep my partner from hunting them down and doing something really evil to them.

You really need to know the cause of death. There could be a health related matter that might impact the other dogs in the litter and / or the sire and the dam.
If it's determined that the death was caused by birth defect, then you should follow the contract which should spell out whether there is a refund of any kind. If the puppy died as a result of negligence of the new owner, threaten to press charges of animal abuse against them and offer no retribution.
Sad to say, that as carefully as good breeders try to screen their puppy people, they don't always make the best decisions.

First off.. this is why you should have a contract before you ever breed a dog or let a puppy go out your door it is for your protection as well as for the protection of the buyer and for that of the puppy. If you had a contract... Most of them state that your puppy will be free of all Conginital (birth defects) or the owner will be given a full Money refund or replacement animal provided that one is available at the time.
As far as undetermined death that is cleared by the vet to be completely non- related to the health and breeding of the animal... you are not obligated. But... if these are goodpeople and are of a quality home... and I hope that you reseached thm before letting them have one of your dogs.. then I would do my best to try and fit them with another puppy if you have one. I would do this at a marked discount. I know that this cuts into supposed profits but breeding quality animals isn't profitable anyway and the end result is getting your blodlines out there into the best homes possible.
I hope that you make a good decision.

I'm not a breeder but having bought a dog myself..

If it isn't something that can be attributed to the breeder then I don't see why the breeder should be responsible for replacing the dog or refunding the purchase price. If the pup had died of some sort of congenital defect then yes, I would definitely take that up with the breeder. In the particular situation that you have outlined though.. It doesn't look like there is any way in which the breeder can be said to have been responsible for the puppies death. The breeder should in no way be held responsible for the death.

This is not a situation where I would feel good about placing another puppy.
If the vet did not feel it was congenital or in any way your fault, or could prove that in any way, they are out of luck.

A necropsy would be nice. I stipulate that in my contract, if a puppy, or dog dies from "unknown" reasons, a necropsy must be done if the owners want any kind of remedy from me.
If it was found to be some fault of mine, I would have to pay the necropsy fee, and whatever remedy. If not, it is all on them.

The law in Virginia and in a lot of states in the USA have very strict laws. Most say the pup has to be bout in to a vet within 10 days from purchase and if a vet finds it unfit for sale then they have to supply a vet certification stating what is wrong with the dog. In Virginia the dog is suppose to be returned to the owner for another vet check or neocropy if chosen to do so.
this sounds more like something they eitehr did to teh pup or wasn't taking proper car of the pu to allow such an injury.
I don't believe you are responsible for anything.
even if the dog had parvo or somethig like that it takes 7-10 DAYS TO SHOW SO THERE WOULD BE NO PROOF IT WAS YOUR FAULD THEY WAITED TO LONG.

I would hope that I would have screened this family better and not even sold them a puppy in the first place. But, if this did happen, I wouldn't feel comfortable replacing the puppy after it died from something possibly caused by neglect. I wouldn't refund them any money either since it was not the breeders fault but the owners.

I am not a breeder but if I were and their vet told mine that the possible causes of death were blunt force, poision or a fall, they would never get another puppy from me free or otherwise. It shows complete irresponsibility on the part of the owner. I would also have plenty to say to the owners of that puppy.
Tell them no more!!!

Since the vet said it could be blunt force or poison, do not give these people another dog. I could see possibly giving them some money back but it is not your fault. You did everything you were supposed to with the vet checks.

I would insist on a necropsy, & offer to pay for it. There is NO way I'd give them a replacement puppy or any kind of refund due to accidents or neglet/abuse. This is exactly why , I carefully screen my potiental families for my puppies. I even ask for a reference from their vet.
