The above people are correct. But it does not take long to apply for a passport anymore. The backlog is over. My mom applied for her passport in Sept and got it within three weeks which was process the regular way.

You can do it now, always have a US passport on hand because you will never know if you have to travel in an emergency.

It cost $67 to renew your passport but if you expedited it will cost you an arm and a leg.

Since passports do not expire for 5 or 10 years, if it expired over ten years ago, then it is more than 15 years old and you cannot renew. You have to get a new one, but you can use the old one for proof of citizenship and proof of identity. First, get new passport photos taken. Then make an appointment with a passport application acceptance office (usually found at a post office). Get the application form there (in advance, so you have time to complete it before the appointment) or on the Internet. Complete the form and bring it with the old passport to the appointment.

You can renew if you meet these conditions:
1. Already have a passport that is not damaged; and
2. Received it within the past 15 years; and
3. Were at least age 16 when it was issued; and
4. Still have the same name as in passport (or you can legally document your name change).

You should start NOW. The process takes some time.

Go to your local post office for the forms, information on fees, photos and the like. Bring it back with everything done and your old passport as well. Make photo copies of your paperwork and the passport page with your information and photo "just in case".

Do it now, as the passport offices are backlogged and processing time is taking a good six months now.
