This is a random question. Would a BYB actually take the time to reg online in a dog forum and ask for help when needed? Would a BYB spend time on dog forums talking about them, for example asking for puppy names? Are BYB mostly families? Or just someone looking for quick cash? Serious answers ONLY please.

I think so. Many backyard breeders love their dogs a lot and are genuinely concerned about their well-being, and are otherwise good people. They may be looking for cash, but there are other motives as well, such as wanting a dog like the mother or father, wanting a puppy, breeding a litter for family and friends who've stated interest in hypothetical puppies, etc. They may ask for breeding help (in fact, no reputable breeder would, unless something really weird happened and I'd expect it to be "has this ever happened to you?" rather than "OMG A DEAD PUPPIE CAME OUT"). Backyard breeders come in all shapes and sizes - families, single people, you name it.

Yes they could. Some BYB are families. Some may be looking for quick cash some give puppies away. Some may be on here to look for help. Some BYB are not evil. Some BYB love dogs. Really people you are looking at a broad range of people who BYB they are all not in the same category. What really annoys me about people on here is they assume too much and they put people into groups and they accuse other people of being uneducated. The most ignorant thing people can do is generalise. It is like me saying all responsible breeders crop their dogs ears, tail dock and all those other horrible things, but that is simply not true is it. Some crop and dock and some don't. By the way I don't breed at all.

I think BYB is a generalized term that pet people have found handy to use for breeders of other than show quality animals. There certainly are plenty that fit under this term but why not discuss the puppy mills run by people far worse than any BYB. My personal dog is from what folks would call a BYB but she is a true purebred in lineage and is documented. She was also veted immediately and both her parents had been health tested as well. Sure, people other than kennels or show breeders will spend time on forums and ask questions if they want to be informed. I say again, BYB is as generalized a term for folks that don't breed for show etc as player refers to someone that mooches off of others and calls it playing them. Just my humble opinion.

You will find that most back yard breeders do not know they are back yard breeders. The only people that are not back yard breeders are one that are breeding to better the breed. That means the parents have been shown and won, These people are only breeding good quality dogs and bettering the breed. Anyone that puts two dogs to gether to have puppies with no showings under the belt is a back yard breeder. What they do not understand is they are breeding poor quality dogs and that is one of the reasons we have so many health problems with purebreds.

If everyone would only breed dogs that have pass all health test including hips & eyes, and mind you these test can be very costly we would breed out some of the health problems that alot of purebreds have today. Not all but it is a start. BYB just want puppies for one reason or another and they just do not get it at all. It is not breeders being high and mighty it is breeders that are doing thier best to keep the breed alive and healthy. Hope this all helps

A backyard breeder can be any random person who just want to breed his/her dog because of any reason (such as want her to be a better dog after a litter, or "I want puppy to be exactly like her"). I think most of people who ask questions about breeding and whelping are byb wannabe. I'm sure I will get some thumb downs for this answer.

"Back yard breeder" is really kind of a catch-all term for anyone who is breeding dogs casually. IThey can range from people who saw that reports puggles and maltipoos are popular right now and decided that breeding would be an easy way to make some money to parents who want their kids to experience "the miracle of birth" to anyone else who is breeding for reasons other than creating truly excellent examples of recognized breeds. They're not necessarily mistreating their dogs or only in it for a quick buck. But they do tend to be uninformed or naive. Serious dedicated breeders work to learn their craft before they even start breeding dogs, and when they do have questions, they don't go online and ask a bunch of random strangers what they should do. The sad fact is that thousands of nice and cute dogs are dying in shelters because there aren;t enough homes for all of them. So even if a breeder treats his/her dogs well and chats online about puppy names, if s/he's not working hard to ensure that the puppies s/he brings into the world are going to help the breed become stronger, that person is just contributing to the pet overpopulation problem.

Yes, a BYB would join a dog forum to ask questions. The reason is because there is no mentor in their life or breeding program to assist them. This is part of what distinguishes BYB from novice reputable ones. The reputable novice will have a mentor and would not need a forum to learn from.

Usually, BYB are looking to make a buck and think that "one litter" won't add to the problem and they are not part of the shelter problem.

BYBs are basically uneducated people who simply don't much care. They only ask a question if it is something that affects them right then and there. They don't research their breed, are not members of their breed club, don't health test and breed designer mixes and say that they aren't adding to the over population problem.

You can learn more about BYB by doing a google search.

Sure. Good breeders would not, so if someone is on a dog forum asking for information on simple things, and they breed, they are most likely BYB.
Many are families, some teach the "cycle of life" to the kiddies by breeding the dogs, some are stay at home moms that use it for extra cash.
Most do not see what they are doing as wrong in any way. Animals are like livestock to some of them, and they are there for the purpose of making money.

BYB's generally dont give a rats a** when it comes to the dogs they own and I would be extremely suprised if they went so far as to name the dog, not to mention register with a forum. BYB's are typically slightly crazy people that own a ton of dogs and never give them the time of day, mostly throwing a handful of cheap dog food in their wire, falling apart cages once every day or two.
I'd say it's not usually a family, maybe one person or a couple. Their main clientel is pet shops that don't do backround checks. Quick cash is the only thing on these peoples mind.
